The things people bring mePeople come to me for all sorts of reasons, and most of them are hard to put into one sentence.
Sometimes it’s clear enough, someone has died, a marriage has ended or something happened years ago that you’ve never said out loud to anyone.
More often it’s vaguer than that, you’re anxious and can’t point to why, not depressed exactly, just not feeling much about anything, you are angry faster than you used to be, managing, but only just, and tired of managing.
Drinking, using, gambling, eating, spending. It started out as the thing that helped and it isn’t helping now, and stopping is harder than people think. I work in a residential rehab during the week, so none of it is unfamiliar and I won’t be shocked.
Other people are a common one, the same argument with someone new, a family that takes a long time to explain, being the person everyone leans on, living with someone whose drinking has taken over the house.
Then there’s how you feel about yourself, not liking yourself much, shame that won’t shift, wondering who you’d be if you stopped being useful to everybody else.
I see a lot of neurodivergent adults too, diagnosed or not, who’ve spent decades being told they were careless or too much or not trying hard enough, and believed it. I don’t do assessments and I can’t diagnose, but I can help with how that’s affected you.
If what’s bothering you isn’t here, that doesn’t mean I can’t help. Ask me.
