Frequently asked questions
How do I start?
Fill in the form on the contact page and I will usually reply within two working days. From there, we can arrange a free fifteen minute call so you can ask any questions and get a sense of whether working together feels right for you.
What happens in the first session?
We begin with what has brought you to therapy, what has been difficult, and what you would like to understand or change. I will also explain how I work and give you space to ask questions. There is no expectation that you tell me your whole life story in the first session. We can take things at a pace that feels manageable.
How long will I need therapy?
There is no fixed answer. Some people come for a few months, while others find longer term therapy more helpful. We will review the work together as we go, including what is changing, what still needs attention and whether therapy continues to feel useful. You are always free to decide when you want to stop.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. What you share in therapy is confidential within the professional and legal limits that apply to all therapists. I discuss my clinical work in supervision, but identifying information is not shared. If I became seriously concerned about your safety or the safety of someone else, there may be circumstances where I need to involve additional support. Wherever possible, I would discuss this with you first.
Do you offer face to face sessions?
No. The practice is currently online only.
What if I have never had therapy before?
You do not need to know how therapy works, have the right language, or arrive with a clear explanation of what is wrong. Part of the work is helping you make sense of your experience. You can begin wherever feels possible.
What if I cry or cannot find the words?
That is completely okay. Sometimes feelings arrive before words do. Sometimes people need silence, time to think, or simply space to feel what is happening. There is no expectation that you perform or know what to say.
Are you registered and insured?
Yes. I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and listed on the BACP public register. I hold professional indemnity insurance and undertake regular clinical supervision as part of my ethical and professional practice.
What if I need help urgently?
My practice is not a crisis service and I do not monitor messages between sessions. If you need urgent support, please contact your GP, NHS 111, or attend your nearest Accident and Emergency department. You can also contact Samaritans on 116 123 at any time.
